Disasters can happen anywhere in the world. flooding, volcanoes, earthquakes, even terror attacks…

The likelihood of being affected by a disaster is very very low, however, if you are affected, you need to be prepared for the kind of phrases that you might hear.
そういった災害に直面する可能性はとても低いですが、万が一の時のために、災害時に聞くかもしれないキーワードを学んでおきましょう。
Often, in an emergency you will have to leave the area or stay in a protected area.
緊急時には、今の場所から逃げる必要があるときと留まる必要があるときがあります。
However, which one can often be a little bit confusing.
しかし、それが分かりにくいときがあります。
When you’re being asked to leave – for example, in an earthquake or a fire, they will often use the word “evacuate”.
例えば地震や火事のとき、「そこから逃げろ」というとき、「evacuate」という言葉がよく使われます。
“Evacuate” means ‘leave’. They will use phrases like, “Evacuate the area” or “Evacuate the premises.” These mean that “You should go.”
「evacuate」は「去れ」という意味です。よく、“Evacuate the area”「このエリアから離れてください」や、“Evacuate the premises.”「この周辺から離れてください」と言われます。他所へ行きなさい、という意味です。
However, in other situations such as tornado or a terror attack, you’ll often be asked to stay inside. Here the keyword is “remain” as in “remain inside” or “remain indoors. When you hear those phrases, you should stay inside.
一方で、竜巻やテロの攻撃の際等、建物のなかに残るように言われるときもあります。ここでのキーワードはremainです。“remain inside”
(外に出ないでください）や “remain indoors.”(屋内にいてください)等で使われます。それらを聞いたとき、建物の中に残ってください。
During emergency, you’ll be often given instructions from staff, police or other emergency responders.
緊急時には、警官やスタッフ等、係員から指示をうけることもあります。
These are often very easy to follow. Lights or hand signals.
それらは、ライトであったりジェスチャーであったり、わかりやすいものです。
However, sometimes they might use phrases such as “follow the directions” or “follow the directions of the staff.”
しかし、たまに「Follow the directions (指示に従ってください)」や 「Follow the directions of the staff. （係員の指示に従ってください）」という言葉が付かれます。
Or, they might say “proceed in an orderly manner” or” proceed to the exit in an orderly fashion.” When you hear words like ”proceed”, they usually mean “go” or “follow.”
あるいは、「Proceed in the orderly manner（規律正しく行動してください）」や「Proceed to the exit in the orderly fashion.(落ち着いて出口まで進んでください)」と言われるときもあります。「Proceed」と聞いたら、「進む」または、「あとに続く」と考えてください。
